Chagall is one of the most famous artists to have settled in France in the 20th century, along with Pablo Picasso. His work, which does not belong to any particular school, is characterized by surrealism and neo-primitivism. In addition to painting on canvas, Chagall also tried engraving, sculpture, ceramics, poetry, stained glass and enamel painting.
The Marc Chagall National Museum in Nice, whose construction project was carried out by the architect André Hermant, was inaugurated on July 7, 1973. This establishment, presenting one of the most important collections of Marc Chagall's works, was awarded the label of Remarkable Contemporary Architecture on 28 November 2000.
In direct collaboration with Marc Chagall, André Hermant designed a building intended more as a place for ecumenical exchanges and meetings than as a museum in the usual sense of the term. To this end, he imagined a house that would be welcoming not only to the works, set in a light-filled space, but also to visitors, who would gradually discover the paintings, mosaics, stained-glass windows and works on paper thanks to a skilfully arranged architectural layout.
